Bribery

Ok, so bribes are NOT a good way to parent. But sadly, they've started in our house. It seems like we are always fighting Roo to do simple things like take her medicine or clean up her room.

My question is, when is a bribe a bribe and when is it a reward?

Lizzie: In the world of positive reinforcement, a bribe and a reward work two different ways. A bride might be like.... "If you clean your room, you get a cookie." Then if the room isn't clean there isn't a cookie. A reward can happen in many more steps. Suppose the room gets somewhat clean, and roo has a chance to pick from a variety of choices of things she likes based on the level of "work" you think she did. Then she is being rewarded for her behavior. Remember that you ahve to reward behaviors that you want to continue. So, offer her choices of rewards that correspon to work. IF she pics up three books she gets a jelly bea or two. If she picks up the entire room and dusts, she gets an entire cake, lol. With a reward She is granted access to something that will INCREASE the liklihood that she will clean her room again. A bribe is a one-time, over the top, offering which is not intended to change her bahavir for the future.
